My job is most often quite fulfilling. I've determined that there are people who need my help out there, and I've focused my energies on simply helping them (rather than focus on being a salesperson, for example). I have no problem sitting down for a meeting with a potential client and having a heart-to-heart discussion about buying in today's San Diego real estate marketplace. After some of these meetings, the potential client decides to wait to purchase for a few months or even a few years. Other times they are ready to move forward and hire me as their agent. Either way, there is never any pressure from me; only good information. Here is an email I recently received from someone who decided to wait...
Hey Justin,
I just want to let you know that I am still interested in buying, and I want to thank you for all the information you provided during our meeting. There are certain aspects of the buying process that I would have never thought about had you not broken them down to me the way you did. You also made it seem more simple at the same time, which I also very much appreciate. However, because of what I now know about the home-buying process, I need to focus my energies on finding a place to live "for now." After I get settled in to wherever it is I may land, I would like to take a deep breath and start the buying process in an appropriate and more thoughtful way (rather than just try to jump into whatever I think may be a great deal at the time - hence your advice). I have always been one to learn from others' advice and mistakes rather than make those mistakes on my own, so you should indeed know that the knowledge you passed along to me was not in vain.
That being said; when I do get settled and I start looking for a home to buy, I would definitely prefer you to be the person I go through. It's very hard to find real people in the world, and I thought your honesty and down-to-earth way of working was very very helpful, and I believe you would have my best interest at heart when working with me on buying a home. I can't express enough how much it means to have that type of help in my corner. So, I'm gonna find an apartment (it's been a real pain), I'll probably sign a 6-9 month lease, and I will give you a call as soon as my stress levels have gone down enough to think straight (haha). I really want a place to call my own, and I want you to be the one who helps me find it. I've got your card and I'm looking forward to working with you. Thanks again, man.
Regards,
Richard
