The city of La Mesa is located nine miles east of downtown San Diego, bordered by Spring Valley, Lemon Grove, and El Cajon. Named one of San Diego’s best neighborhoods in 2014 and 2015 by San Diego Magazine, the “Jewel of the Hills” can be a great option if you’re looking for an urban feel without the noise and cost of downtown San Diego. Here are just a few reasons to take a look at La Mesa!
1. Charming, newly updated “downtown” district.
A recent $5 million renovation has transformed historic La Mesa Village, improving lighting, crosswalks, and green space to make the area more pedestrian-friendly. La Mesa has a respectable Walk Score, due in large part to these recent improvements. In addition to its antique stores and mom-and-pop shops, the Village has also built up a vibrant bar and restaurant scene, including Swami’s, BO-Beau kitchen + garden, Hoffer’s Cigar Bar, and San Pasqual Winery Tasting Room and Gallery.
2. Walking and hiking trails.
La Mesa is the perfect neighborhood for some outdoor exploring. The city features a public walking trail through 14 parks, public art installations, and the “secret stairs”, a set of three steep stairways dotting the surrounding hills. If you’re looking for something a little more strenuous, nearby Cowles Mountain provides a great workout and stunning views of Coronado Island.
3. More bang for your home-buying buck.
The median home price in San Diego proper was around $605,000 at the end of 2016. In La Mesa, the median home price was only $529,975 (estimates taken from Zillow.com, with many properties listed below $500,000. Buying in La Mesa will often get you more space as well; single-family homes with yards are common in the area. And if you are looking for a view, homes on Mount Helix have some of the best views in San Diego County.
If you're looking for a suburban location that still offers plenty to do, La Mesa just might be the perfect fit!
