Is Fall a Good Time to Buy a New Home in San Diego?

The real estate market can be seasonal, with some seasons seeing more movement and higher inventory than others. So is fall a good time to buy in San Diego?
I couldn’t say for sure if it is luck, personal timing, or something else, but fall has historically been a good time for me to find the right home at the right price for my own personal real estate purchases. The last two times I’ve bought a home with my family both closings have taken place in the fall (October and November).
Choosing the right time to buy a home depends on a number of factors. For some people, buying a home can be an important year-end business decision, while for others, buying a home has more to do with personal life circumstances (you’re having a baby soon and need a bigger home, your lease is expiring and it’s time to move, your kids have all left for college and it’s time to downsize, you’re moving to San Diego from another area, etc.).
Fall can work well for homebuyers for a couple of reasons. Inventory is typically smaller than it is during the summer, but competition (from other buyers) also tends to shrink in the fall since some people don’t want to move at the start of a new school year. Sellers who were expecting/hoping for more interest are often more willing to negotiate when competition is lower. So if you’ve been looking for several months with no luck, you just might find that perfect gem in the fall!
Of course, there is the issue of going through the homebuying and moving process right before the holidays, but if that is doable for you, fall is as good a time as any to buy property in San Diego. Less competition plus motivated sellers is always a good recipe for homebuyers!
